Which is Better for Nasolabial Folds: Botox or Juvederm?

Nasolabial folds are a naturally occurring phenomenon where the lines on the side of your mouth become more apparent with age. Also known as laugh or smile lines, even younger patients can have pronounced nasolabial folds depending on their lifestyle. Cosmetic treatments have been the tool of choice to manage these muscles, with some treatments working better than others.

So which is better for erasing nasolabial folds: Botox, or Juvederm? While Botox is more accessible, Juvederm is the more effective treatment. The advantages of using Juvederm significantly exceed that of using Botox, though many patients choose to take both for better results.

Botox vs Juvederm

Botox and Juvederm are both FDA-approved cosmetic products that help the skin rejuvenate and maintain its youthful appearance. They’re some of the most popular aesthetic treatments today, since both treatments are minimally invasive and produce results almost immediately. These injectables are more effective than makeup and much more efficient than prescription drugs or medication, with immediate and long-lasting results.

For the treatment of nasolabial folds, Juvederm edges out Botox in terms of efficacy and application. While Botox can help reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds, Juvederm’s formulation ensures more effective and semi-permanent treatment.

This is especially crucial for nasolabial folds, since using injectables or other products on the area carries more risk compared to the cheeks or below the mouth. The sides of your mouth and nose contain major blood vessels and arteries, and any damage to these arteries can cause damaged skin to form on the sides and tip of the nose.

While it’s possible to inject dermal fillers and products in the nasolabial area safely, most dermatologists usually access it by going through adjacent areas to avoid hitting any major blood vessels. This is why sometimes you can have a Botox injection meant for your nose that goes through your cheek.

How Can Botox Treat Nasolabial Folds?

Botox’s main compound is a chemical called botulinum toxin, which works by blocking the neurotransmitters that signal your muscles to contract when you move. When applied to the face, Botox can effectively “freeze” your muscles in place, preventing wrinkles and lines from forming when you talk, smile, or laugh. It can be applied on almost all areas of the face, most commonly around the upper face, around the eyes, and the forehead.

  1. Is it permanent?

Botox isn’t a permanent solution. Your body will eventually manufacture new neurotransmitters to replace the inactive ones in your muscles, which will allow them to contract and move again. This is also why Botox needs to be reapplied every 3 to 6 months, depending on the area so that any wrinkles don’t deepen with age.

  1. How is it applied?

Applying Botox is relatively simple. The dermatologist will apply some numbing cream or local anesthetic to the site and inject Botox around the areas that need treatment. The entire process takes a little over an hour, and patients can resume their normal activities after a day or two of downtime.

  1. Why should patients consider using it?

The major benefit to using Botox to treat nasolabial folds is that it produces relatively fast and efficient results. Since they work by relaxing the muscles, your nasolabial folds are less likely to sag and become more prominent with time. Depending on the treatment area, you can also help reduce the number of static wrinkles that form in areas like the cheeks.

  1. What are the drawbacks to using it?

One consideration when using Botox on nasolabial folds is the necessity of follow-up treatments every few months. As mentioned above, the nasolabial area is highly sensitive to injectables and other dermal filler products, so the less strain it experiences, the better your results will be. Botox also can’t be reversed if the patient doesn’t like the results – they will need to wait out the effective period of the treatment.

How Can Juvederm Treat Nasolabial Folds?

Juvederm is a dermal filler used to fill in areas around the mouth and nose, restoring facial volume. With hyaluronic acid as its principal ingredient, this product works by literally “filling in” the grooves and wrinkles on the face. Since hyaluronic acid helps hold water, it can also improve your skin’s elasticity and volume. It’s most commonly used to treat nasolabial folds and marionette lines, though some formulations can also work on the cheeks, lips, and mouth.

  1. Is it permanent?

Like Botox, Juvederm isn’t a permanent solution, but it does last longer – around 6-9 months – and can be extended depending on the concentration of the hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers like Juvederm typically need less reapplication than Botox. Your dermatologist may require a few more visits to make sure the filler works, but Juvederm requires very little follow-up after the initial treatment.

  1. How is it applied?

Juvederm is injected in the same way as Botox, with roughly a similar timeframe for the results to show. Most dermal fillers take up to two weeks to integrate with your skin, with minimal downtime and post-operative aftercare required. You can even combine Juvederm with other dermal fillers for more drastic improvements.

  1. Why should patients consider using it?

The best reason to use a dermal filler like Juvederm on the nasolabial area is that it can fill in the grooves that make nasolabial folds so defined. Unlike Botox, which is more of a preventive measure, dermal fillers like Juvederm address the root of the problem and fill in the gap. If too much filler material is applied, the process can also be reversed or adjusted via hyaluronidase injection.

  1. What are the drawbacks to using it?

One drawback of using Juvederm is cost. Since dermal fillers are designed to work longer than Botox injections, they also command at least a few hundred dollars more in terms of price. It also requires more skill and technical expertise to use: while a patient can inject themselves with Botox with enough experience and advice from their dermatologists, only trained professionals or plastic surgeons should inject Juvederm.

Comparing the two, the difference between Botox and Juvederm is obvious. While some clinics may favor one treatment over the other (depending on the dermatologist’s experience, the possibility of future plastic surgery, and availability of the product), Juvederm offers a clear advantage and a better experience for anyone looking to treat their nasolabial folds.

What About Other Dermal Fillers?

Other dermal filler brands like Restylane, Sculptra, Radiesse, and Belafill also use hyaluronic acid to fill in grooves and lines in the face. However, each brand also specializes in the areas that their treatments can be used on, so always check with your dermatologist before using them.

As a general rule of thumb, hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers are more likely to work than Botox on nasolabial folds, because they fill in the area rather than stop it from contracting. A patient is more likely to have a successful experience using dermal fillers than other skin treatments because of this mechanism of action.

It’s even possible to combine multiple dermal fillers and Botox for a more comprehensive skin rejuvenation regimen. This helps your skin manage the symptoms of nasolabial folds and other lines and wrinkles in multiple ways, increasing the efficacy of your overall treatments.
